The Use of About to and Going to

Introduction


About to and going to is used in the sentence in which an action is going to happen. We can say that 'about to' and' going to' is used when an action is happening without any delay or very soon. About to is used in the past tense. The first form of the main verb is used after 'to'. We use 'about to 'or going to when we are talking about something happen very soon or we do something very soon in the future. It means that we are not talking about for in the future. we usually use will for that. We are talking about very, very soon like in the next five minutes.

Use of about to in affirmative sentences

Structure

Subject + Helping Verb + About to + Main Verb + Object
Subject + Is/Am/Are/ + About to + VI + Object

  • I am about to sleep. (It means that I will sleep very soon )
  • You are about to play. ( It means that you will play very soon)
  • She is about to watch T.V.(It means that she will watch T.V. very soon)
  • They are about to leave. ( It means that they will leave very soon)
  • We are about to study. ( It means that we will study very soon)
  • I am about to buy a new mobile. (It means that I will buy a mobile very soon.
  • My father is about to come. (It means my father will come very soon)
  • We are about to go out. ( It means we will go very soon)
  • Children are about to play in the gound. ( Children will play very soon)
  • Hina is about merry john. It means Hina will merry john very soon)

 Use of About to in negative Sentences

Subject + Is/Am/Are + Not + About to + VI + Object

About to can be used in the past.

Examples

  • I was about to come out of my house when it began to rain.
  • She was about to speak when her husband gave a slap on her face.

  • Children were about to pluck flowers when the gardener ran behind them with a stick in his hand.

The use of Going to ( An Intention or Plane)

Express future plans decided at the moment of the speaking. Express something that is about to happen. Going to can be used for future planes We use going to when we have the intention to do something in the future.

  • I think you are going to miss your test. ( it means that you made a plane to miss your test.
  • She is going to write a book. ( It means that she made a plan to write a book)
  • He is going to be a teacher. ( It means that he made a plan to be a teacher)

Difference between About to and Going to

About to describes an action that takes place immediately or very soon.
 Going to describes an action that takes place in an unspecified time in the future.
