Present Continuous tense with examples and exercise.

 


In this article, I have explained the present continuous tense with simple examples. I have explained how to make positive, negative, and interrogative sentences of present continuous. After reading this article you will comprehend the present continuous tense. A large number of students can not understand the tenses even in higher classes, particularly non-native students. This article is very helpful for non-native students.

Present continuous tense

Introduction

Present continuous tense is used for continued and ongoing actions. It is used for actions that are ongoing while speaking. It is used for actions that are in progress right now.

Used

  • Continued and ongoing action
  • Action in progress while speaking
  • Action in the process right now
  • Action taking place at the moment
  • Action taking place only for a limited period
  • Action arranged for the future

Rules

In present continuous tense auxiliary “Be “is used. Help verb Is, Am, and Are is used in a sentence. Present participation is used as the main verb. In present continuous tense, the first form or base form +ing is used as the main verb.

Structure of sentence

If the subject is I then the helping verb “Am” is used after the subject in a sentence. If the subject is He, She, It, or singular subject helping verb “Is” is used after the subject in the sentence. If the subject is you, they, or plural subject then the helping verb “Are” is used after subject in a sentence.

Positive sentence

Subject Auxiliary Be + Main Verb + Object

Subject +Auxiliary+ Is , Am , Are + (VI) ing + Object

Examples

  • He is waiting for me.
  • I am trying my best.
  • You are telling many lies.
  • He is learning his lesson.
  • They are playing cricket.
  • We are going to college.
  • She is singing a song.

Negative Sentences

In the negative sentence, we use not after helping verb.

Subject + Auxiliary Be + Not +Main Verb + Object

Subject + Is/am/are + Not + VI + Object 

Examples

  • He is not waiting for me.
  • I am not trying my best.
  • You are not telling many lies.
  • He is not learning his lesson.
  • They are not playing cricket.
  • We are not going to college.
  • She is not singing a song.

Interrogative Sentences

In interrogative sentences helping verb Be is used before the subject. Helping Verb Is, Am and are used before the subject.

Auxiliary Be + Subject + Main Verb +  Object

Is /Am / Are + Subject + VI + Object

Examples

  • Is he is waiting for me?
  • Am I trying my best?
  • Are you telling many lies?
  • Is he learning his lesson?
  • Are they playing cricket?
  • Are we going to college?
  • Is she singing a song?

Interrogative + Negative

In Interrogative plus negative sentences helping verb is, am, and are is used before the subject and not is used after the subject. The first form of the main verb+ing  is used as the main verb. An object is used at the end of the sentence.

Auxiliary Be + Subject + Not + Main Verb + Object

Is / Am / Are + Subject + Not + VI + Object

Examples

  • Is he not waiting for me?
  • Am I not trying my best?
  • Are you not telling many lies?
  • Is he not learning his lesson?
  • Are they not playing cricket?

  • Is she not singing a song?

(WH) Interrogative Sentences

In (WH) interrogative sentences the words Which, How, What, Where, Why, When, Which, and who are used at the start of the sentence. After these words helping verb Is, Am, Are is used, after the helping verb, the subject is used. The base form of the main verb +ing  is used as the main verb. At the end of the sentence, the object is used.

(WH) Words +Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object

Why + Is /Am/Are + Subject + (VI)+ ing +Object

Examples

  • What is he not waiting for me?
  • Why Am I not trying my best?
  • How are you not telling many lies?
  • Where Is he not learning his lesson?
  • Why are they not playing cricket?
  • When are we not going to college?
  • Why is she not singing a song?

(Important Note)

If the interrogative word (who) is used in a sentence, the structure of the sentence is the following.

Who + Helping verb + main verb + object

Who + Is/Are + VI+ing + Object

  • Who is knocking at the door?
  • Who is beating you?
  • Who is abusing you?
  • Who is helping you?
  • Who is teasing you?
