What are Imperative Sentences?

A sentence that expresses a command, request, advice, and proposal is called an imperative sentence. According to the sense of reported speech, Said or Said to change with ordered, Forbade, Requested, Advised, and suggested or proposed.

Examples

  • Open your books ( Command)
  • Don't make a noise. ( Negative command)
  • Please give me a glass of water. (Request)
  • Always speak the truth. (Advice)
  • Let us play together. (Proposal)

Direct & Indirect of Imperative sentences with command

Rules

1. 'To' is used in the place of 'Inverted commas'.
2. Said or Said to change with Ordered.
3. Said or Said to change with Forbade ( In the case of negative order)
4. The first form of the main verb is used after 'To'
5. 'Don't' is not used if the word Forbade is used in indirect sentences.
6. Do not is removed and Not to is used instead of Don't.
7.  The pronoun is changed according to the rules.

Examples


  • He said to me," Open the door."(Direct)
  • He ordered me to open the door. (Indirect)
  • He said to me," Don't waste your time.""(Direct)
  • He forbade me to waste my time. (Indirect)
  • Mother said to me," Don't touch anything.""(Direct)
  • Mother forbade me to touch anything. (Indirect)
  • I said to him," Don't tease others.""(Direct)
  • I forbade him to tease others. (Indirect)
  • The judge said," Call the next witness.""(Direct)
  • The judge ordered to call the next witness. (Indirect)

Rules


1. 'Said' or 'Said to' change with 'Requested'.
2. 'To' is used in the place of 'Inverted commas.'
3. 'The first form of the main' verb is used after 'To'
4. Pronouns are changed according to rules.
5. The word 'Please' is removed from the reported speech.

Examples


  • My friend said, " Please come with me.""(Direct)
  • My friend requested me to come with him. (Indirect)
  • My younger brother said."Please give me your mobile.""(Direct)
  • My younger brother requested tp give him my mobile. (Indirect)
  • The workers said to the manager." Please increase our salary.""(Direct)
  • The workers requested the manager to increase their salary. (Indirect)
  • He said," Please come in time.""(Direct)
  • He requested me to come on time. (Indirect)
  • I said to him."Please clean this room.""(Direct)
  • I requested him to clean that room. (Indirect)

Direct & Indirect of Imperative Sentences with Proposal or Suggestion.


Rules


1. Said or Said to change with Proposed or Suggested.
2. To is used in the place of Inverted commas.
3. 'The first form of the main verb is used after 'To'
4. If the word Suggested is used, the preposition To comes after suggested.

Examples


  • My doctor said," change your lifestyle"(Direct)
  • My doctor suggested changing my lifestyle. (Indirect)
  • My friend said to me." Consult a doctor.""(Direct)
  • My friend suggested me to consult a doctor. (Indirect)
  • The doctor said to me," Take medicine regularly.""(Direct)
  • The doctor suggested to me take medicine regularly. (Indirect)
  • My teacher said, "do FSC after matric.""(Direct)
  • The teacher advised me to do FSC after matric. (Indirect)
  • I said to him," Buy a black dress.""(Direct)
  • I suggested to him to buy a black dress. (Indirect)
