 In this article, I have explained the use of Hardly and Scarcely with examples and exercises. I have also explained how and when hardly and scarcely is used in the English language. I have also given examples and exercises at the end of the article.

The use of Hardly and Scarcely 

Introduction

The sentence in which hardly and scarcely is used consists of two parts. In the first part, the past perfect tense is used. In the second part, the Past Indefinite Tense is used. The second method of translating such sentences is that we can use Hardy / Scarcely at the beginning of the sentence and the helping verb is used after hardly and scarcely. When is used as a conjunction to connect both parts?

Structure


First Part ( Past perfect tense)


Subject + Helping verb + Hardly + Main Verb + Object
Subject + Had + Hardly + VIII + Object

Second Part (Past Indefinite tense)


When + Subject + Main Verb + Object
When + Subject + VII + Object

Past perfect + Past Indefinite


Subject + Helping verb + Hardly/Scracely + Main Verb + Object +When + Subject +  Main Verb + Object
Subject + Had + Hardly/Scracely + VIII + Object  + When +Subject + VII +  Object

Examples

  • I had hardly come out of my house when it began to rain.
  • The wife had scarcely spoken a word when her angry husband silenced her with a rebuke.
  • He had scarcely reached home when his wife began to weep.
  • I had hardly finished the book when my mother sent me to Bazar.
  • We had hardly reached the garden when it started raining.
  • The players had hardly reached the ground when the people began to throw stones on them.
  • He had Scarcely out of the airport when police arrested him.
  • I had hardly reached the office when my officer began to scold me.

The Second method


These two sentences can be translated in this way Hardly or scarcely is used at the beginning of the sentence. Helping  Verb of the first part of the sentence can be used after hardly. The second part is translated in the same way as the above mentioned.

Hardly/Scarcely + Had + Subject + VIII + Object + When + Subject + VII + Object

6. The teacher had hardly entered the classroom when students stand up respectfully.
   Hardly had the teacher entered the classroom when students stand up respectfully.

7. I had hardly started reading a book when my friend came to see me.

8. We had scarcely reached the examination center when the paper started.
   Scarcely had we reached the examination center when the paper started.

9. Her fiance had hardly seen her when she entered the room.
