Important Rules of Grammar about nouns for B. A students of Punjab University

In this article, I have given important rules about noun and verb agreement. I have given the rules and examples. This topic is very important for F. A and B. Students of Punjab University.I have also given the important sentences which may be selected in the B. A and F. A  examination.




1. Agreement of subject with verb

1. He go to college daily (Incorrect)   
    He goes to college daily. (Correct)
2. The crow are thirsty. (Incorrect)   
    The crow is thirsty. (Correct)
3. The boys has talem tje test. (Incorrect)   
    The boys have taken the test. (Correct)

2. Two are more singular subjects joined by and take a plural verb


4. A boy and a girl is reading. (Incorrect)   
   A boy and a girl are reading. (Correct)
5. The wall and the tower has fallen. (Incorrect)   
    The wall and the tower have fallen.(Correct)
6. He and his friend has arrived. (Incorrect)   
     He and his friend have arrived. (Correct)
 7. The Viceroy and Governor-General is in the town (Incorrect)   
     The Viceroy and Governor-General are in the town. (Correct)

3. Tow singular nouns joined by "and" if they mean the same person or object take a singular verb. In such cases both the nouns take the same article, not a separate one. 


8. The poet and philosopher are dead. (Incorrect)   
    The poet and philosopher is dead. (Correct)
9. A white and red car are parked in the street. (Incorrect)   
   A white and red car is parked in the street. (Correct)
10. Bread and butter are difficult to earn these days. (Incorrect)   
     Bread and butter is difficult to earn these days. (Correct)
11. My friend and benefactor have come. (Incorrect)   
      My friend and benefactor has come. (Correct)

4. The following words have a singular verb if they are used as a subject.

neither

Many
A large number

12. Each one of them were guilty. (Incorrect)   
      Each one of them was guilty(Correct)
13. Every one of the students have stolen the book. (Incorrect)   
     Every one of the students has stolen the book. (Correct)
14. Many a man were drowned. (Incorrect)   
     Many a man was drowned. (Correct)
15. None of them are innocent. (Incorrect)   
      None of them is innocent. (Correct)

5. Two singular nouns joined by "either-or neither-nor " take the verb in the singular.


16. Either she or his cousin have stolen the book. (Incorrect)   
      Either she or his cousin has stolen the book. (Correct)
17. Neither he nor his daughter have stolen the watch. (Incorrect)   
      Neither he nor his daughter has stolen the watch. (Correct)

6. When two subjects are joined by " either-or, neither-nor " are of the different persons the verb agrees in person with the one nearest to it.


18. Neither he nor we is angry. (Incorrect)   
      Neither. he nor we are angry. (Correct)
19. Either you, or he are mistaken. (Incorrect)   
       Either you or he are mistaken. (Correct)
       either you or he is mistaken. (Correct)
20. Neither Saleem nor his friends has copied. (Incorrect)   
      Neither Saleem nor his friends have copied. (Correct)
