Introduction

It is used to express a continuous action that started in the past and continued until sometime in the past. In the past perfect continuous tense, there will be time reference such as 1990, for 10 days, Since Monday Etc. We can say that it tells an action that has started from a particular time past. It tells that an action started for some time period. I had been studying in this college since 2018. It means that I started my education in this college in 2018 and I studied in this college till sometime in the past.

If there is no time reference then it is not past perfect continuous tense because there is no limit about the time of action when it started in the past.
